BUYING WITH CONFIDENCE
The paperwork behind the puppy.
What veterinary records, microchip details, registration papers, and your agreement actually mean.
PepperWhisker editorial
Make “papers included” specific Ask which registry is involved, whether registration is complete, and which documents transfer to you. If a registration application is supplied, ask what remains to be completed and who is responsible for any fees. Do not infer breeding rights from the phrase “full papers.”
Read veterinary records separately Veterinary records describe examinations and care. Vaccination records should show what was administered and when. Review them with your own veterinarian to plan the next steps. An examination records findings at a particular time; it is not a promise that a dog can never become ill.
Ask about parent health information Where parent test results are available, ask what was tested, which dog the result belongs to, and how the result can be verified. A statement that a puppy has seen a veterinarian does not establish that its parents have undergone specific testing.
Understand the microchip handover Ask for the microchip details and the instructions for registering your own contact information. Check whether the transfer is complete and keep the information current when your address or phone changes. Identification details are useful only when the associated records are maintained.
Read the agreement before the deposit The agreement should identify the puppy, total price, deposit, balance deadline, delivery arrangements, and cancellation terms. Any additional health guarantee should explain its duration, coverage, exclusions, claim procedure, and remedy. Request clarification in writing when a term is unclear.
Keep everything together Save your application, written quote, agreement, receipts, transport information, and veterinary documents. Having them in one place makes the first veterinary visit and any later questions easier.
Our puppy profiles provide fields for registry and registration details. If information is not shown, request it before reserving. A blank field should lead to a question, not an assumption.
